Just a little story sharing today. No challenges, no checklists, just simple advice that shifted my life.
I was a little freshman starting to navigate the middle-of-the-road phase of life figuring out how to become an adult and what kind of adult I wanted to be. We were told to sign up for a program that would link us up with a mentor. Ahhhh- scary?? Right.
No matter where we are in life, we always have that scary step. This scary step was the one that changed my life.
My mentor was a mid-thirty male who crushed it in the corporate world and now runs his own tax business. Like, whoa, intimidating? YOU BET.
I reached out, email of course, and got a response to call him later that day to chat. O.M.G. a phone call? I don’t do phone calls (well, at least back then…now they are my jam).
So, two sweaty palms and 10 nervous paces later…I called him. And guess what? It wasn’t that scary!
He and I clicked so well. He told me his path to where he is today. He asked me what my goals were and even offered to connect me with other people. If that isn’t creating luck for your future self, I don’t know what is.
Towards the end of our conversation, I decided to ask him, “What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?”
Then said, “Never take anything personally and always be hungry for the next level.”
That completely rocked my world. Being the type of human who cares (too much) dearly about pleasing those around me, I needed to hear this. Someone yells at you – it’s probably about them. Someone is short with you – it’s probably about them.
Do you see the pattern? If you carry yourself in a way that is respectful to others, forward-looking, and serving yourself, odds are, the way others treat you is usually about them and not you. So STOP taking every god damn thing so personally!
The moral of the story?
One. Take the jump at that scary step
Two. Always have a mentor (or mentors)
Three. Stop taking everything so personally.
